I've always wanted to set a novel in this area, and I finally achieved it with A Killing at Smugglers Cove. I had great fun writing about places that are so familiar to me - this won't be Iris's last visit to Devon!

The Horrors of Suffragette Hunger Strikes

In a recent talk on Death at Crookham Hall, I explained why the suffragettes went on hunger strike and how it became a turning point for their cause. When newspapers reported on the horrors of force-feeding taking place in prisons, it caused outrage. For the first time, public opinion began to turn in favour of the suffragettes.

Discussing Death at Crookham Hall, I described how the word suffragette came to define the suffrage movement. Originally coined as a derogatory term by a Daily Mail reporter, the suffragettes claimed it and made it their own.
